2025 Yuejin Lantern Festival |Rings of Light

Light

Light is power transcending time and space and depicting the world we receive. In 2025, we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Yuejin Lantern Festival. The town and water space are integrated into the exhibition environment with the participation and contribution over 300 art teams to elevate the Yuejin Lantern Festival from a local festival to an international city brand.

Rings

Rings are the accumulation of time. In nature, the changing seasons, the waxing and waning of the sun and moon, create the growth trajectory of "light." At the beginning of each year, we come here preparing the Festival and are brought back to the place where everything began and pray for continuous growth and prosperity.

Project Shimmer

Creator|Urban Art Studio

Design concept|

The name "Yuejin" origins from the winding river in Yanshui, which forms a crescent shape. How can we capture the night and the moonlight reflected on the water? Using small lanterns, we create an atmosphere of moonlight and starlight.

Among many lantern festivals, Yuejin chose to use lanterns to showcase the festival. More than 100 traditional lanterns are floating on the water, traversing between modern and traditional languages, lighting up Yuejin Harbor.

Kukulkan(Feathered Serpent)

Creator|Liao Pei-Sien

 Design concept|

The god "Kukulkan" (Feathered Serpent) worshipped by the Mayans is said to have come from an unknown land. Kukulkan taught the Mayans knowledge of science, skills, architecture, agriculture, and even law. After completing its mission, the Kukulkan returned to the unknown land.

This artwork simulates the dynamic appearance of an alien creature taking off from the water surface, with wings growing from small to large, and the body curving towards the sky. The top four pairs of wings use mechanical principles to move with the wind at Yuejin Harbor with the attempt to present the dynamic of flapping wings.k and forth within the changing lunar eclipse.

Botanical Garden In The Time Machine

Creator|Hsiao Li Ci

Design concept|

The creation is inspired by the theme of the cycle of nature's ecology. The coming and going of people also impact the growth of plants, as if the plants are chasing after people. When people come, the plants disappear. Visitors will be quietly followed by the plants, and when the wandering plants encounter people, they will quickly run away.

On the other hand, at the entrance, plants hide behind the trunk of a big tree to scout for enemies and prepare to inform the plants inside that someone is coming!

Infinity Light Circles

光核 Light Core

Creator|UxU studio

Design concept|Infinity Light Circles

Annual rings are the circular patterns formed during the growth of trees, and each ring represents the accumulation of time, memory, and experience. The artwork "Infinity Light Circles" transforms the imagery and concept of annual rings by combining geometric calculations and optical illusions to construct infinite light loops. Each circle layer symbolizes the beginning of life that circulates endlessly with infinite energy.

Each year's Yuejin Harbor Lantern Festival is a new collective experiences accumulated year after year, like annual rings continuously developing and connecting. The annual rings, like galaxies, continuously expand to intertwine art, environment, and social interactions at Yuejin Harbor aiming to connect locally to internationally in the future and inspire more creativity and participation.

Design concept|Light Core

Annual rings are formed as trees grow outward from the core along with time; the outer expansion represents continuous change and accumulation while the core symbolizes stability and continuity. Growth is not just the passage of time but also the exploration and inner strength of life. A forest begins with a seed, and a group of objects begins with the birth of life.

ThI e artwork "Light Core" constructs a core-like sphere with light, representing a seed falling from the sky. It is ready to take root. It is also like a scene from a fantasy movie visited by an unknown creature. Many achievements often start from a tiny beginning just like the Yuejin Port Lantern Festival triggering infinite ripple,. The artwork conveys an idea: "No matter how the external environment changes or how many challenges the future holds, we shall always keep the original intention like the core of annual rings.”

凝 [ MIRAGE ]

Creator|Zhen Wei , Wang Rui-Heng , Hsu Tzu-Jo

Design concept|

“The night gave me black eyes and I use them looking for light.”-Gucheng, “Black Eyes”

The industrial ready-made object , traffic corn, which is most easy way for diverting , rerouting the crowds and redefining spaces because it gets highly identical characteristic in terms of color and shape. The traffic corns are always used to create new boundaries within a singular environment owe to it’s adaptability and flexibility.Accumulation of silt changed the shape of coastline, therefor, the importance of Yuejin Harbor faded away. The Yuejin Harbor will not return to it’s old glorious days even government built new infrastructure over there.

Facing this particular situation, we decided to deploy 32 units of traffic corns on three levels as a metaphor to demarcate the original coastline. With the usual specification of the object; the staggered height configuration reveals a certain kind of fluctuation between reality and illusion.Traffic cones are set on light-weight and stable iron frames and let in light, creating a deflection of light that echoes the plants emerging from the water's edge in the inverted objects. The juxtaposition of contrasting objects creates a fantastical walking experience along the shadowy waterfront. In the time lapses, one passes through units of different heights as if they were In the time lag, one travels through units of different heights, as if wandering between histories, unable to recognize the fixed distance between the old and new borders.

In the darkness of the night, MIRAGE acts as a signal to remind us not to get used to the darkness.

Another Full Moon

Creator|Koji Morioka & Kyoto University of the Arts

Design concept|

This is an artwork about light that began in the waters of Yuejin Harbor ten years ago. Like seeds sown, they have grown and thrived over the years. They are now almost touching the moon and getting closer to dreams.

Koji Morioka from Japan has been deeply attracted by the seasonal butterfly, the blue-spotted butterfly, flying across the sea between Taiwan and Japan, like an annual promise, changing and flowing with time.

The butterflies that meet during the period of full moon bring us the spring.

Light Gathering

Creator|Yu Yu Art Studio

Design concept|

The light brings us back.

Yuejin Harbor nurtures the energy of culture. Shimmering waves connect every life encounter. And art teams from different time dimensions inject energy year after year and continuously accumulate and build our generation's shared memory of Yanshui.

The artwork "Light Gathering" uses bamboo, iron, and LED lights to construct a penetrating water installation. With different perspectives changing, the gradually intersecting lines are connected in space as if we having our own wonderful lives in the slow process of life , and the light guilds us to meet here again. The intertwined memories flow and expand with time and transform into million dots of light, show various forms in space.

Slowly

Creator|Wang Jhen We

 Design concept|

The waterfront of Yuejin Harbor, after environmental optimization, has not been known for its elegant path shaped by the breeze and the moonlight reflected in the water waves.

This artwork tries to remind, review, and relive historical fragments in a biomimetic way. Light brings us back to the scene.

End of light: The Black Hole

Creator| Jeon Youngill

Design concept|

The black hole, with its unimaginable power, converges history and contemporary into a beam of light.

This light merges with the reflection on the river surface to become one and flow together.

The center of this accretion disk defies our common sense and leads to a future full of danger and hope. The black hole, composed of traditional Korean paper carrying Eastern history and lights and showcasing contemporary human technology, may lead us to that unknown realm. This black hole is capable of swallowing even light and has always been fascinating with its mysterious power.

Design concept|

The hinterland of Yuejin Harbor is wide and the water and the earth are illuminated by the sun and the moon, which has accumulated abundant energy. The animals living here also receive this power. Among them, the wolves and dogs feel it the most. When the moon is full, the wolves and dogs are summoned by this glowing energy. Over time, will they turn into werewolves?! Don’t underestimate the power of nature of of the moonlight.

A Wheel of Light and Moon

Creator|Peppercorns Interactive Media Art

Design concept|

This artwork "A Wheel of Light and Moon" combines the alternation of light and shadow as well as the changes of the moon. The light reflecting on the lake surface at night represents the coexistence of light and darkness. The moonlight flows and changes in the darkness as to the rebirth of the past at the present time. The "wheel" symbolizes the changes in the moon's phases and the passage of time that expresses the continuous evolution of the Harbor's past, present, and future.

This artwork attempts to showcase the changes of the moon, its reflections, and the intertwining of the old and new history of the Harbor. It symbolizes both time and continuity. The moonlight represents rebirth. Through the interplay of water curtains, lasers, projections, and electronic sounds, it depicts the moon's journey from the darkness of the new moon to the brilliance of the full moon, symbolizing accumulation and rebirth.

Multimmersion

Creator| Aka Chang

Design concept|

This artwork, "Multimmersion," is an ongoing art project of artist Aka Chang, which began in the summer of 2017. With linear continuity and multiple composite light media, Chang repeatedly drew lines in space to reshape natural landscapes.

Visitors are invited to enter and explore the dynamic relationship between human body perception and the changing environment. In the 2025 Yuejin Harbor Lantern Festival version, the artist simplifies the volume of light to a state of falling from top to bottom. By utilizing the physical properties of light refraction and reflection of water, the converging beams of light are deconstructed into a spectrum. The light reflected on the mirror-like water surface can also create the illusion of extending infinitely to the bottom, like constantly immersing lines.

Flame City

Creator|PRIOR object

Design concept|

This artwork is inspired by the Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival. The beehive firecrackers symbolize a plea for divine protection. They are a part of folk beliefs and embody a strong sense of collective consciousness and energy exchange. The visual effect of red light bursting forth resembles the moment of the beehive firecrackers' explosion demonstrates the process of people praying to the heavens with a strong sense of ritual and power.

The triangular structure carries the imagery of mystical and unknown technological forms. The presence of water reflects light and fire to interact with the heavens and earth through the form of beehive firecrackers, allowing visitors to feel the sacred atmosphere of the Beehive Firecracker Ceremony.

This artwork aims to blend traditional rituals with a sense of science fiction, allowing visitors to experience the beehive firecracker ceremony while feeling the sacredness and power behind traditional beliefs.

Light trails

Creator|Vangin Design

Design concept|

Light trails are the product of long-exposure photography that records the movement trajectory of light sources such as the annual rings of trees. Both record the ecological and environmental changes experienced during growth and symbolize the passage and change of time.

This artwork captures the cultural context of Yuejin Harbor through the flow of light, and like a photograph, it allows visitors to have a dialogue with the flowing light through displacement.

Stroke of Moonlight

Creator|SenseSite Studio

Design concept|

The bright moon hangs high in the sky and emits a fascinating light. When the moonlight outlines a slender and even curve that slowly follows the edge of the bridge, gently touchs the shore and rising, finally transforms into the entrance of the magical waters of Yuejin, Yanshui, each and every visitor is invited to enter and experience the sensory experience of light and shadow changes.

Bubbles

Creator| Wang Chun Yuan , Yang Min Di

Design concept|

"Qi" is the fundamental element of life in Taoism. “Qi” is eternal and indestructible and floata in the universe in the form of light. If it descends to Earth, it will drift in every corner of the earth as bubbles seen in the clouds or in the water.

Each bubble nourishes life and can be found as carriers in all sort of things. When the carrier falls, Qi will return to the cosmos of life memory to enter the next journey of life with the annual rings of light

Whisper of Images and Shadows

Creator| Chou Po Ching x Ho Kun Han

Design concept|

Inspired by the fragmentation and repetition of light sources in water ripples, this artwork captures the changes and rhythms of geometric shapes in motion. The light refracts and overlaps through the ripples to generate layers of stacked geometric contours, like a whisper in space that constructs diverse structures of speech with repeated rhythms.

These shapes mimic the irregular undulations of ripples to showcase the dynamic randomness in the interplay of light and shadows, an ambiguous conversation that silently narrates the poetic flow. The balance between stability and change creates a tranquil and profound atmosphere, Visitors can feel the serenity and depth of fleeting light.

Wind-Stirred Leaves

Creator| Tsai Yi Ting

Design concept|

Leaves, tinted with the hues of nature, carry the imprints of time and embody the rhythm of the seasons—from the tender sprouting of buds to vibrant flourishing, and finally to graceful withering. Life endures within this eternal natural cycle.

In nature, a delicate interaction exists between the wind and the leaves. The leaves sway with the wind, tracing its invisible form. Bathed in sunlight, flowing water, and the gentle breeze, they merge harmoniously with their surroundings. As time flows on, the ceaseless cycle of life unveils the eternal constancy within change.

Design concept|

A day after the full moon,  and only once a year, the corals all spawn on the same night, following an ancient and mysterious convention. On this night, the underwater sky is so bright that human beings become like tropical fish. From sunset to the rise of the moon, they travel among the great, city-like structures of coral reef and witness this grand celebration of life. When the moon rises again, the world is quiet, and under the moonlight, life quietly begins to take shape.

Along with the shift of time, trees witness the changes of the seasons: from the blooming of spring flowers to the flourishing of summer, to the fruiting of autumn and winter in the repeated cycle. Even in the cold winter, the buds of spring quietly grow.

This artwork is a collaboration with local residents. Through the careful guidance of botanist Huang Chia-lung, we explore the unique ecology of Yuejin Habor Park in Yanshui together. From leaves to fruits, from a single plant to the ecosystem, we rediscover the plants along the riverside and feel the pulse of nature.

At night, the interplay of light and shadow presents the mysterious ecology of Yuejin Harbor Park in Yanshui in front of us, leading us to get to know detail and shining history here.

花映 The Reflection of the Flower

Chen Yu Ting

創作者Creator| Zhang Zhi Hua

Design concept|

This artwork is made of iron bars and LED lights which are twisted and constructed into a giant flower shape, half appearing above the water. When the artwork is lit up, the lights shine and fade out in different speed, creating multilayers. In addition to it, the reflection from the water completes the structure into an entire flower light. The design and arrangement of the lights imply the rise and decline of Yuejin Port. The half rising flower above water also symbolizes that the affluence of Yuejin Port was bred by the water, hoping this cultural site can transform and rise from the water again.

Memories of Light

Creator| Lo Hydelin

Design concept|

"The Moment of Light that Creates the Accidental Memory" is a work that explores the overlap of real and virtual time and blurs the boundaries between virtual and reality through multidimensional time experiences. In this digital age, time is no longer linear, and irreversible concept; it can also be rewritten and reshaped in virtual space.

We can exist on multiple time axes simultaneously, with real present and digitally created virtual time coexisting. The virtual time dimension and the real-time axis run in and out synchrony to create a complex overlap of time. This overlap presents to viewers with an indistinguishable time-space experience and the blurring and confusing definition of "real-time" and "virtual time." The overlap of real and virtual creates an accidental memory that allows people to re-examine the relationship between real and virtual, past and present.

A Continuous Circle for Eternity

Creator| PRIOR object

Design concept|

The round tube chair is centered on the concept of "time stacking," expressing the interweaving and accumulation of human life and industrial processes. The round tube shape of the chair symbolizes the cycle of time. These tubes are arranged horizontally to  represent different stages on the timeline; each stage carries different memories and traces, like the stacking of time.

The chair uses unprocessed metal tubes to retain the original texture of the material. The arrangement of a single material shows the multi-layered structure that emphasizes the stability and the purity of the material of the design.

Creator| Chen Hung Wen

Design concept|

Ombining light and nature, the artist turns trees into a dynamic light and shadow painting. In this art work, trees are the symbols of nature and carriers of light. Each leaf and branch is dyed with different colors by the light to present a dreamlike visual effect. As the light changes, the tree shadows look like dancing under the night sky and through intertwine with the rhythm of the wind and the flow of time a fantastic journey of vision and senses began.

In the night, trees, the dancers of light, lead the audience into a different fantastic world where interesting interaction of light and nature can be experienced.
