Yuguang Island Festival
In 2020, the world was mired in turmoil due to factors such as climate change and COVID-19, among others. This year, in response to the pandemic, the Yuguang Island Art Festival set "Dwelling On the Island" as its theme for the exhibition, referring to a place where nature and man coexist, where one can settle their body and spirit. The exhibition centers around the words "to heal". Beginning with the natural environment of the island, the beach, the woods, the sunset, and the waves form the exhibition hall. The festival invites 13 artist groups to transform the environment and fashion a space for healing to call their own. And in this space, the emphasis is placed on the artists' response to and narrative of their Yuguang Island experience, and how art heals, whether it's the artists themselves or the audience. During the Art Festival, there will be various performances, workshops, markets, dining in nature, and excursions that will let the public experience the wonderful scenery and cultural living of Yuguang Island from different perspectives. We also hope that each and everyone who visits Yuguang Island can find, through transitioning and healing, their own dwelling, where each can settle their body and mind.

artworks :
Yuguang Island Flags
Ali Chen and Students of Yizai Elementary School, Yuguang Campus
The abstract symbols designed by Ali Chen correspond to Yuguang Island's natural elements: the sun, the stars, the moon, and the waves. Students at the Yuguang Campus of Yizai Elementary school were invited to combine the various shapes to create a national flag for their own ideal country. The flags will decorate the sole passage that leads to Yuguang Island to welcome the travelers.
Yu-Yu Art Studio
Seed-shaped sculptures, floating, moving with the ebb and flow, swaying like waves in a sea of woods. Like signs that point the way along the navigation route, they hover in the first forest on the island after crossing the bridge, guiding the travelers, and connecting Yuguang Island with the travelers on an emotional level.
Chien Chih Chen
A person's dwelling is a dynamic existence between "the return (to the universe)" and "the metamorphosis (toward a higher life)", and thus corresponds to the origin of the universe. The relationship between mankind, buildings (for living) and nature has become closer and more sensitive as the type of "dwelling" evolved. Integrating each other to become one is a predictable development of future forms of dwelling. This artwork mimics the shedding of an organism. The body grows and metabolizes to establish the relationship between itself and nature, much like an insect does through shedding.
Ching Ting Tseng
Drops of water, big and small, staggered throughout like little standalone booths. Travelers who reach this forest can choose their preferred scenic view, snuggle inside to be wrapped by soft, woven fabric, and let the weary body and mind heal.
起伏 Ups and Downs ǀ 何采柔 Joyce Ho
The inspiration for“Ups and Downs” comes from the act of resting. At first sight, the enlarged pillow seems to be no more than an ordinary household object, but upon closer look, the physical state of the object is in a fixed shape, as if a person is still resting upon it, compressing it. This makes the inanimate object looks like a living organism, stretching in the woods. The artwork is installed in the middle of Yuguang Island's forest. The hope is to bring to mind the idea of respite as the traveler arrives at the beach after moving through the forest, all the while associating with a surrealistic living state.
夢想之框 Frame of Dreams ǀ 石昭永 au Shih
Oyster racks are a familiar sight on Yuguang Island, often seen floating on the surface of the ocean. This artwork takes the oyster racks out of the water to recombine them in an organic manner. As the rays of morning light or sunset filters through the ecologically rich bamboo frames, the various faces of nature and biology can be seen while also triggering unlimited imagination.
The Sea Blows Your Way
In the darkness, light allowed the pool to reflect its surrounding environment, initially, they are of rigorous geometric shape and the mirrored surface conveys an orderly message. However, once the wave and ripples appear on the mirrored water surface, the lines and shapes also oscillate and distort, and the pristine environment becomes chaotic. Between order and disorder, reality and interpretation begin a dialogue.
Society functions under rules that are defined by humans, but sudden changes in the natural environment can create ripples in the original calm state and interrupt all rules in an instant. Audio and light elements in the work mark the transition from a serene to a chaotic state and then returning to tranquility again as if returning after a catastrophe. Humans often believe that they control the land, but once compared to the changes of the land it seems to be even more insignificant.
Whisper of the Sea ǀ 蔡筱淇 & 吉川公野 Tsai & Yoshikawa
nspired by the scenery and sound of the sea at Crescent Bay on Yuguang Island, UK-based artist duo Tsai & Yoshikawa creates an installation ‘Whisper of The Sea’ on the coastline. The work explores the gradual color change of light refracted on the sea surface and reinforces the corresponding relationship between light and water waves. The form of this art piece presents the appearance of a turritella seashell, which is commonly seen on the island, eliciting visual imagery of the resonating seashell sound. When the viewer observes the work, the healing tidal sound is “heard” as if it builds a conversation with the sea on Yuguang Island, stepping into a paradise beyond the Crescent Bay scenery.
Chen Hung Chiu
This piece of artwork combines an industrial crane and a chandelier and is placed on the borderline between the forest and the beach. In this strange yet familiar scene, the artwork is like an outsider from the city, disturbing the boundary between nature and the city. The artist attempts to create a combination that elicits a surrealistic feeling and brings the audience into a picture frozen in a particular moment, accompanied by the breeze, the shadows, and the subtle glimmer in the woods. A place reserved for spirituality, created by weaving together the artificial and the natural
Cheng Tsung Feng
The Yu Quan is an ancient vessel. In the past, it served as a tool for catching fish. Then, as it was no longer used, it became a symbol that bears lost culture in museums and literature. In this piece, we tried to take this vessel and reproduce it with different dimensions and appearances. The artist focused on the memories of the handicraft and the unique spatial experience that is perceived with the body to create a one-of-a-kind Quan House so the vessel has a chance to hold all kinds of possibilities and imagination. The Quan House created by the artist is not used for trapping fish. Instead, it captures the attention of people, luring them in as if they are fish in the water, Swimming into the alluring landscape of Yuguang Island.
Ting Hsu
A circle implies the concepts harmony, infinity, and eternity. Two circles of equal size sit in the seamless transition between the sea and the land. The distinct silhouette is outlined in black, the equal and balanced composition offering soothing and peaceful visuals. The gradient of saturated hues corresponds to the changing colors of the sea and sky. While it carries the local scenery upon it, the circles also bring imagination, as if they are pieces that peeled off from the sky to reflect an inverted world. Or they can be eyes on a body of sand, staring toward the sky. And within the pupils is a passage to a parallel universe.
Will Become Trees and the Sky ǀ 阿部乳坊 Abe Nyubo
On Yugaung Island, you can get a sense of the enormity of the sea and the sky. I found a tree here that is like a natural awning. I want to let travelers rest upon the wooden platform beneath the tree, and shift their attention to the sky and the treetop. This piece is an extension of the traveler series and has the symbols of the series: a large backpack, sunglasses, and a sleeping bag. When he stretches his hands skyward, it's as if he can touch the sky. The color of the sculpture transitions from the yellow under his feet to the blue of his outstretched hands. The tree means a connection to the roots, the foundation, home, the ground, the origin point. The sky means the outside world, space, overseas, reaching for something different.
Chih Hung Liu
The festival has invited the artist Chih-Hung Liu to immerse himself in the island and transform sounds such as "waves against the wave breaker", and "wind through a forest of whistling pines" into sketches. His strokes are extended to become the design for the main visuals. Over the course of the festival, Liu will continue to create, recreating the sounds on the island the story of its people as sketches, photos, and texts as part of the Sound Geography series.
