2024 SMOA The City's Story Begins Here

We are deeply aware of the crucial role architecture plays in the developmental narrative of a city. Streets, akin to the lifeblood coursing through urban veins, propel the vigorous growth of cities through their bustling thoroughfares. The edifices lining these roads not only define the external aesthetic of streets and skylines but also encapsulate the essence of a city. Situated in the erstwhile Old Five Channel District, Hai'an Road was once the bustling hub of the old capital, the thriving epicenter of commerce in Taiwan. However, time's inexorable passage saw the fading of the canal scenery, the transformation of waterways into land, and the gradual disappearance of former glory. The road underwent widening and endured a decade-long closure due to underground street projects.

It wasn't until 2004, when local residents, governmental bodies, and artists joined forces for the "Initiate Citizen Esthetic Movement," stitching the urban fabric with art, igniting a series of experimental yet exhilarating urban transformations. Over two decades, Hai'an Road metamorphosed from fragmented spaces into a beautiful new realm.

In 2005, the "Hai'an Street Art Museum" was officially established. Subsequently, it witnessed events like "Spring of Haian: Haian Street Museum (Part II)" in 2006, "Hai-An + Playhouse : Another Imagination, Another Possibility”. in 2011, and a ten-year retrospective exhibition “海安 ここにいる" in 2014. What makes Tainan enchanting is its possession of both ancient history and contemporary urban aesthetics.

How much imagination and potential can a city harbor? In Tainan, "streets" are not merely conduits for traffic; they serve as a "Catwalk" , “The Grand Clocks," and even an "Art Galleries"! In 2018, "Street Art Museum of PLUS" incorporated the illustrious Zhongzheng Road, turning it into a platform for the city with themes like "“Runway of the City – Light up Tainan Zhongzheng Road”" and "Sounds of the City – Ringing Haian Road." Over twenty artists curated more than forty installation artworks tailored to Tainan's unique urban character, bringing back the splendor of Zhongzheng Road and Hai'an Road and infusing urban life with creativity and boundless possibilities.

In 2024, as the "Hai'an Street Art Museum" celebrates its twentieth anniversary, it leads visitors into the heart of the city's narrative through elements of the canal, guiding them with sail shadows, boat whistles, and aquatic motifs. From alleyways to ancient wellsides, immerse yourself in Tainan's distinctive leisurely pace of life; then, follow Hai'an Road to the canal's edge, sketching the city's future contours.

The artworks embody both daytime installations and nighttime audio-visual spectacles, incorporating new media art and interactive elements, enriching the artistic experience of the city and echoing Tainan's profound sense of human interaction.

The story of the city begins right here.

Over the span of four centuries, water has always been a constant in Tainan,  water has remained an enduring presence in Tainan, bridging the gap between past and present across time and space: the Taijiang Inland Sea transformed into land, upon which the old five channels were excavated, gradually evolving into streets.  "The Spring" Square, once the location of an idle building, reintroduced water into its surroundings.

This monumental waterfall emerges unexpectedly, a marvel amidst the cityscape. ( Indeed, isn't the profound transformation of urban landscapes a miracle in itself?). This perpetual source of "living water" offers a whimsical disruption in time and space, prompting profound introspection while embodying the flux and constants of Tainan's 400-year narrative.

Sailing Castle Hai’an, this artwork metamorphoses the urban expanse into a fleet of majestic ships adrift upon the sea, erected adjacent to the remnants of a shipyard dating back to the Japanese colonial era. Crafted with sturdy wood, it features a series of staggered sails that embody the architectural essence of Tainan spanning four centuries. It appears as though a multitude of vessels have congregated along the waterfront, their sails billowing in the breeze, poised for departure or awaiting safe return. This place acts as a central point for coming together and reconnecting, a haven to explore and reminisce about the shared memories of the city. Step aboard, set the sails, face the winds, head out to the boundless expanse of the sea; we depart, we return.

Let’s talk in Hai’an

The term "khai-káng" (which translates as "to chat" in Taiwanese) not only commemorates the historic opening of Tainan's harbors but also immerses visitors in a captivating experience. Seated on these bollard shaped seats, visitors are transported as if they are embarking on a sea voyage, traversing through the annals of time and embarking on a journey that resurrects four centuries of history. Moreover, as the seats rotate, they trigger pneumatic switches that emit ship horns, orchestrating a melodic tune. This artistic installation interacts with its audience, captivating passersby, the surrounding environment, and the essence of the city itself in a vibrant dialogue with history.

The term "lâng-kheh" translates as "guest" in Taiwanese.

Positioned at the back side of the ventilation tower, two seats crafted in the shape of a bollard are installed.

Upon sitting, visitors activate air pressure mechanisms that emit sounds, harmonizing with the installation “Let’s Talk in Heian” nearby. This arrangement invites visitors to envision the vibrant hustle and bustle of ships and commerce that once animated the dock area of the Old Five Channels. The engagement of guests serves as the most enchanting facet of this artwork, infusing it with life and meaning.

Hai'an Road once lay submerged beneath the waters of the Taijiang Inland Sea. Over four centuries, the tides receded, yet the area remains bustling with a constant stream of people and vehicles. The artist employs cascading light to conjure the essence of water, weaving together notions of "ocean currents", "river flows", "human traffic" and "vehicular movement" into a circular installation. Through skillful gradation techniques, a spatial tableau emerges. By day, it shifts with the natural light, while by night, the luminescent flow perpetually cycles, as if traversing boundless realms of time and space, imparting a magical aura to the surroundings and igniting boundless imagination.

Four centuries ago, this area was part of the vast Taijiang Inland Sea,  yet today Hai'an Road pulsates with vibrant shops and bustling crowds. This artwork channels the essence of the sea through its stainless steel seats, meticulously hand-polished to a silky texture reminiscent of the majestic trees that once adorned the shores of the inland sea. The imagery of the free flowing water, pays homage to the hydrographic legacy of Hai'an Road, encapsulating four centuries of Tainan's rich history. It invites passersby to linger upon this water-like imagery, offering a moment to bask in the beauty of bygone eras intertwined with the present.

This artwork draws inspiration from the meandering waterways of Anhai Port, situated at the southernmost tip of the historic Old Five Channels. Harnessing the abundance of natural resources from Tainan's lush mountains and bountiful seas, the artist encapsulates the essence of the local landscape and its produce in five vibrant and exuberant hues: the golden yellow of Yujing Mango, the verdant green of Madou Pomelo, the azure blue representing the Old Five Channels, the rosy pink reminiscent of Jingzhaijiao fish pond, and the regal purple of Guantian's Water Chestnut. These colors mirror the diverse cultural tapestry of the ancient city and its genial hospitality, infusing a joyous ambiance into people's interactions.

Wells, acting as connectors between surface and underground realms, hold historical significance as crucial water sources and are steeped in mystery. Older generations in Tainan share tales of a secret passage that connects from the ancient well at Chikan Tower to Anping; in the Old Five Channels district, a half moon well situated in front of Hai'an Temple, during the Dragon Boat Festival believers would draw “noon water” to ward off illnesses and seek blessings. The artist reimagined the Half Moon Well, transforming it into a piece of street furniture, symbolizing the coexistence of past and present while serving as a portal between the real and virtual worlds. Through scanning the QR code provided, viewers can create a virtual avatars to navigate through Verse U and interact with others.

This artwork abstracts the characters of Japanese animation into colorful  concentric circles, flying freely on the broomstick over the Hai‘an Road alongside the black-faced spoonbills of the Taijiang area. It illustrates the main character’s courage in life and her independent spirit as she forges her own path, paired with the flowing imagery of night lights. This conveys the enduring vitality of Tainan, an ancient cultural city that has evolved continuously over four centuries, and the bold dreams its people have dared to pursue.

This installation features seats around a floral platform designed with a ripple effect to represent the hydrology of Tainan’s wetlands. Above, abstract figures of the characters of Japanese animation, along with flying black-faced spoonbills, begin their journey from these wetlands, traveling through time from the  past and present of Hai’an Road into the future. This dynamic and imaginative surreal wetland landscape flows and evolves in every corner of Tainan……

Once an inland sea, Taijiang was a boundary between land and sea. Hai-an Road was the frontline of this interaction, where various traces of historical development are embedded within the city. This artwork utilizes wave patterns overlaid with silhouettes of different historical skylines, creating a shimmering effect with the front layer of metal grids. As people and vehicles pass by, the piece displays a flickering appearance, echoing along this road that once bordered the sea.
