Yuejin Lantern Festival
Creating a unique artistic atmosphere has always been the main feature of the Yuejin Lantern Festival. The "2018 Yuejin Lantern Festival” was hosted by the Tainan Municipal Government's Cultural Bureau and incorporated unique artistic creations that permeated the natural landscape with artistic reverie and beautiful ambient light. This year's Lantern Festival takes the theme of "breathing with light", as once again we invite artists from home and abroad to bring their vision and inspiration to Yanshui's Festival of Light. Artists exhibiting in the modern form of lighting installations combine with the traditional culture and scenery of Yanshui, engendering in the audience, feelings of romantic nostalgia, as the living color of lighting installations dances off waterways and green fields. Yanshui is one of the most venerable places in Tainan. The first thing people often think of when we speak about Yanshui is the annual Beehive Firecracker Festival, where people don motorcycle helmets and raincoats, and dance and play amidst the burning light of exploding firecrackers. Yanshui also hosts the Lantern Festival on an annual basis, another celebration focused on bringing life to the local area using the medium of light. In this way we can say Yanshui comes alive every year, breathing with the light.
Breathing with Light
Our journey begins at the point where the river and sea embrace, old Yuejin Port. As we start the adventure together, we follow the river, down meandering pathways, as distant lights guide us to an artistic field. Three “timelines” divide the location into three distinct areas. The timelines are called "Travel of Time", "Call of the Environment" and "My Scenery with You". Within each timeline is a different representation of the moon. The timelines each encapsulate a different feeling, and a different sensory experience for the visitor. Thus, three moons, three scenes, three moods. The festival location reflects the idea of cyclical movement. No matter where we begin on our journey, entering into one of the three timelines, as we walk together into scenery that is a blend of art, local customs and natural splendor, we finally return to our point of ingress. Thus, we return to the place our journey began.

This dream resides in the present, not in a future paradigm. The dream pigs are stacked on top of one another, like dreams within dreams. Life itself can often feel like a dream, when the content of the dreamscape intermingles with waking reality. Sometimes our reality evolves due of the content of our dreams. Can we dream together? As our imaginations entwine, perhaps we can co-create our reality like a dream.
Mix Hippo |
The rivers of Yuejin Port continuously flow inland from the sea, like a constant rhythm breathing life into the salt water town of Yanshui. The artist took the above two elements as inspiration in the creation of this artwork. Cute and endearing, the Mix Hippo, floating on the water with it's balloons and colorful inner tube, brings a joyful atmosphere to the art space. The artist uses the common mouthpiece found on an inner tube, making the hippo's nose into a kind of mouthpiece, emphasizing that breathing fills the Mix Hippo full of energy. As he drifts on the surface of the water, he brings good fortune and New Year's blessings to all who cross his path.
A team with an architectural background brings a concept full of fantasy. This piece reflects concepts of light and time. Time is like a river, an inevitable and unstoppable movement, always flowing onward. Light and shadow move together, playfully interlaced in a constant dance. The body of the artwork, constructed of steel bars, is erected above the audience. As lights embedded in the structure illuminate the bridge, cotton materials move in the wind, creating living shadows that dance and intermingle.
Flowers are composed in different stages of the life cycle and scattered on the water. Some protrude from the surface of the water, appearing to be in bloom, whilst others remain budding and mostly submerged. Through the use of static cool blue light and rich colors, a geometric flower of light and shadow is formed on the water's surface. During the day, different colors are produced through the refraction and reflection of different angles of sunlight. At night, through the use of changing LED lights, the artwork exhibits a dynamic visual effect.
A Mobius ring symbolizing an infinite loop is placed on a large tree, connecting the two-dimensional curvature of the front and back. Under the harmonious aura of gradual change, the technology and the natural environment are reconciled and dependent on the symbiotic link.
This interactive art project involves participation from the public. Inspiration is drawn from the poem “Frog Croaking Upon Moon Pool”, and reflects three time periods, ancient, modern and future. Construction of the work contains three manifestations of shape, sound and color. The artist worked with the public to produce paper mache frogs that are scattered along a riverside. As lights illuminate the reptilian troupe, we hear a chorus of voices, the harmonious chanting of the colourful frogs, as voiced by local people.
"Hua" is inspired by the glorious Yanshui Beehive Firework Festival. This artwork uses organic floral patterns and shapes, exploding outwards in vibrant colors, reflecting the cheerful atmosphere of the spring blossom and symbolizing the historical background of old Yuejin and its prosperous life. "Hua" uses 3D carvings, interwoven into an abstract botanical cloud. In the daytime the colors are bright and vivid; as night falls, the work takes on a different appearance as its fluorescent colors glow and shimmer in the dark, like a huge, surreal and mysterious object that landed from outer space.
This artwork is a 12-meter-diameter ring body. The outer part of the ring is constructed from mirror-material which reflects it's surroundings, integrating the artwork into the environment. Inside the ring, fitted lights run in the same direction, creating a dynamic movement. The work is placed at an oblique angle, allowing the viewer to enter the interior of the ring to experience the magical luminescent atmosphere inside. Seen from different distances and angles, the artwork appears to form different shapes, like the edge of an evolving crescent moon.
Falling Moon |
Shuiyue Bridge is one of the most important bridges in Yuejin Port. Standing on the bridge, looking back in the direction of the old salt water street, you can witness scenes from the river, trees gently swaying on the riverbank, accompanied by fishing people going about their work. On the other side of the river, there is a old courtyard house, with great old trees looming above, forming a beautiful living scene. Although the river is not wide, it still leads to the sea. The artist uses his imagination to set a huge moon falling onto the water of Yuejin Port that slowly rotates in the current. The illumination of the moon is changed by the influence of the tide to create a light that breathes with the environment.
"Better" through the pursuit of ambitions and growth in the challenges of life. "Better" through the changing vision and imagination inherent in the evolving landscape of life. The Yu Yu Art studio has participated in this festival for many years, and their series of artworks often use bamboo. This time the team employs bamboo to represent growth and transformation in the trajectory of human life. The external structure of the artwork uses bamboo, stacked and weaved together to form a defined structure whilst the white space inside the work represents the freedom sought, as we traverse life's journey.
VJ Suave
Brazilian new media artists bring mobile projections, and children's patterns run in the Yuejin Port Park, attracting the attention of friends of all sizes. The rich and rich artistic content invites the public to come in a beautiful atmosphere. In the production of the work, the local residents will be invited to participate in the workshop to draw special memories belonging to the town. Work together to complete this piece of salt water. In the dark, the artist set foot on the mobile projection bike and took the people together to venture through the light and feel the salt town.
This artwork takes its inspiration from the dancers of old Asian culture, as the surface of the river is transformed into a dance floor, a stage upon which these radiant dancers are arranged. The dancer's upper body is created through a process of acrylic laser cutting and the plastic materials are then illuminated with colorful light. The dancer's lower skirt is constructed from round iron, with colored gauze wound about the frame, freely flowing in the wind.
Aurora in Roman mythology is the goddess of dawn. She inhabits the heavens every morning to announce the dawning of a new day. She represents the first light that banishes the darkness of night for daylight and the promise of renewal. The work attempts to condense the dreamy attributes of light into a medium that is as breathless as the environment. The whole piece is created according to the on-site bridge body. The 1600-meter rainbow diaphragm is condensed into a 30-meter iridescent canopy with repeated bending methods. It hopes to create a rainbow-like cloud in the sky. Rich color and multi- layered light combine with the environment to create a wonderful artistic setting, blending reality and fantasy.
"The moon turns into a prosperous night and the waves add a round of moon." Although the slowly flowing waterways and streets-capes of Yuejin Port have changed over time, they still share the same natural winds and river systems. This scenery forms the inspiration for the artist, as well as the poerty of the Yuejin Eight Views - Xingrong Shuiyue. The artwork is a hydrodynamic device. Circular shapes cut from fluorescent acrylic float on the water. Beneath the shapes, styrofoam balls draw power from the movement of tidal waters. The artwork reciprocates the movement of the water, up and down, creating a blurred image of moon floating.
The experience of light in modern life is often viewed through a familiar medium. For example, mobile phones, screens, projections. Yet with this artwork, through the careful placement of artificial light sources and the use of organic elements as a means of intervention, the artist seeks to evolve our sensory experience of light in the modern age. Through the use of scatter-type devices, the scale of the work is expanded into a field where the audience can participate, and the body's senses are immersed in a space co-constructed by artificial light and natural objects.
The FROGGS | Groupe LAPS
Light puppets play music on stage like a real rock band. Working with the principle of movement decomposition, 56 puppets represent 7 musicians key frames. During the concert, the audience can interact with the music and the show. A control desk is set up on the riverside and visitors can select a music style, send solos and also play music, using sampling.
