2023 Yuguang Island Art Festival | Art on an Island
Art on an Island
Art doesn't come from zero to one, whereas it makes the "one" be seen. The curation theme is "Art on an Island". The curator adopts the artwork in order and guides the visitors to see "Art on an Island", created by nature.
The artists come to this island, perceive the surroundings, and then present the artwork taken from nature and formed in nature. The artwork features the natural environment of Yuguang Island—the astringent, wild, and earthy plant scents; the intense sea waves, along with the rhythm, lap the grainy sand, and the sunset clouds, drawn by the sky as the canvas shift to sixty looks within sixty minutes.
Nature has its order, and so as the island, which has its refined and systematic order. Tracing the art, people tread on the island and narrate its self-contained chronology of events. People break the mode of time calculated by seconds, minutes, and hours— Nature and people coexist in harmony with space-time.
Of the island, the sequence is the link between the last step and the following step: the series is to come across. During the 24-day Art Festival, we gently invite you to view the sun and moon’s light as the skyline and the ebb and flow of the tides as the chorus. Together we meet the colors and hours with the fantasy and reality of Yugaung Island.
By the island's past, there is the sensibility, and the sense is by the island's future.

The flags are designed using a gradient of the colors from the visual identity. Viewed from afar, the overlapping flags ebb and flow with the wind and fuse together to form a band colors, which symbolizes the view of the island's coastline. The colorful backgrounds and drawings by the children transforms every flag into each person's on version of Yuguang Island. It's as if there is an entrance to a planet of dreams, enticing the public to enter the island to appreciate the works on display in the art festival and enjoy the sunset.

The artwork takes Yuguang Island's windbreak as the base and connects the sea into a close-knit relationship. Meanwhile, it continuously explores the characteristics of ecosystem evolution and reflects in the system of arts and humanities.
Between the forest and the sea, the duo artists adopt the "Seeking Wonderland 2023" project as the pivot and extend the aspect from the wooden plank trails to the sandbank.
In the way of naturalistic planting design, the artists feature the beach plants to enhance the appearance of the existing sandbank, such as beefwood, Pandanus screw pine, seashore vine morning glory, and the chaste tree, to name a few. As the visitors, on their move, follow the path of sunlight and listen to the sea waves under the realm of the dome, their senses of sight, hearing, and touch become more sensitive than usual.

Aru
Aru's first visit to Yuguang Island

Walking into Yuguang Island's forest of whistling pine, the beautiful natural scenery feels like a different, mysterious universe, crisscrossing and colliding in the mind. What little creatures are hiding in the unknown bushes, in the flower beds, or atop the branches? Nature and reality intertwining makes the world so rich, so fantastical, with the magical yet bizarre colors of a kaleidoscope. This is Aru's first visit to Yuguang Island. A very distinctly different island of dreams.
The Recurrence of "The Persistence of Memory."

"La persistencia de la memoria", also named "The Persistence of Memory"
or "Melting Clocks", is a 1931 painting completed by the well-known Spanish artist Salvador Dali and one of the most representative works. It's currently in the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) collection.
As for the term" Melting Clocks", have you ever felt confused with it?
Does the painting express how man reacts to anxiety in temporal immediacy? Or does the artist subconsciously realize that he inevitably has to face death in the end and feels anxious?
The artist Chen Chun-Hao attempts to reproduce this masterpiece, presenting Dali's surrealist artwork in 3D instead of the original 2D painting and shifting it to the beach of Yuguang Island to make a synthesis of nature and artificial work.
While passing through the path at slowing paces, listen to the rolling dust and the rustling woods. The sunset of Yuguang Island dyes everything with misty and gentle hallucinated colors. The rolling dust lifted by the wind is its color, wrapping the whole body around the warm sun and the all-day sunbathed sand. Wandering along the sand by the glinted sea waves, you step into the dreamy weaving net, where the temperature seems to be visualized. A touch of warmth penetrates the skin, seen by the eyes, and then senses transmitted by and by to the brain. The image portrays the romance of Yuguang Island.

Translucent Dreaming
Creator | Yip Heidi
The existence of Yuguang Island is like a dream. In this dream, the idea of time is constructed by the accumulation of the resonance between each whistling pine and the waves in the distance. The large installation, Translucent Dreaming, sits on the boundary of the sandy beach and the ocean tides. At different times of the day, it interacts with the surrounding natural environment: the rustling of the trees, the crisp clanging of ceramic tiles, the sunset, the moonrise. As the audience watches the display, they, too, naturally become performers on this stage.

In the shapeless void of the night, how do we measure time?
Interval is an elongated horizon installed along the coastal forest landscape. Each mirror faces the ocean and is installed at a different angle from the horizon, corresponding to each of the forty minutes of the sunset. Each mirror frames a different part of the sky, a different snapshot of the sunset along the time axis. The audience can walk around the installation and move between the different perspectives. The abstract concept of time and its expression as moments in nature cross paths repeatedly on the coastal line, reunited, again and again.

The work examines the meaning of the location known as Yuguang Island by juxtaposing moments in time and blending them across the temporal axis. To contemplate, from a diachronic perspective, the cultural heritage of Yuguang Island, and expanding that perspective to include Anping Harbor and Tainan.
From the Dutch East India Company, the establishment and decadence of the Ming Dynasty, to the encounters of Taiwan's indigenous people and the ecological history of Taiwan, they are all combined and fused into one single text. In the form of singing and piano duet performances, the programs on Yuguang Island will feature European music from countries keeping good company with Taiwan, such as the Netherlands, Spain, and others. Additionally, Taiwanese composers perform new renditions of Beiguan operas and traditional Tsou music.
